She is a bit slow when it comes to relationships, not realizing peoples true feeling for her.
She also has a natural instinct to protect those closest to her. Especially her sister, her mother, Peeta and Gale. She also protects those she deems weaker than her. She seems to have a compulsion to do so. She is also merciful, and if she has to kill, she tries to make it as quick and painless as possible. She likes to be in control of her own life and hates when people try to dictate her actions.

FINALE?! – Katniss Everdeen grew up in District 12 in Panem. Her mother was the daughter of a rich merchant family who fell in love with her father, a lowly miner, and moved to the poorest section of the district to be with him. Katniss was always close to her father, who taught her to hunt and survive in the forest outside their district. She has a little sister named Primrose.
When she was 11, her father died in a mining accident. Her mother plunged into a deep depression and it fell to Katniss to provide for their family. Using the skills her father had taught her she hunted illegal game and sold it at the local black market and sometimes to the richer merchants in town. She also entered her name into the games three extra times, to receive tesserae (a year’s worth of food for one person) for her mother, her sister and herself.
When she was 12, while hunting in the forest she encounters a boy a few years older than her who is also forced to provide for his family. She learns that his father died in the same mining accident as her own. They meet up often after this and hunt together, splitting the money from their catch. This boy, Gale Hawthorne, teaches her how to set snares and traps, though he always seems to be much better at it then her. But he cannot outmatch her bow skills, so they consider themselves even.
When she is 16, Katniss volunteers for the Games, in place of her younger sister, Prim. The male tribute for their district is Peeta Mellark, the son of a baker. Peeta, it just so happens, has been in love with Katniss since they first started school. Haymitch, their advisor and a past winner of the Games, discovers this and decided to use it to their advantage, though Katniss thinks it’s all fake and does not realize that Peeta’s feeling are genuine until much later. During the preparation for the Games, her stylist and new found friend, Cinna, decided to play up Katniss’ fiery personality and make her into “the girl who was on fire”. He designs and creates a dress covered in jewels that indeed makes her look like she is on fire.
Katniss and Peeta win the Games, though only because of some quick thinking in the end, when the Gamemakers try to make the two of them fight to the death. During the later “Victory Tour”, Peeta and Katniss continue their “star-crossed lovers” charade and Peeta formally proposes to her and announces that she is pregnant, which she is not. The next year, the President announces that since it is a Quarter Quell (which happens every 25 years, and these are the 75th Hunger Games), that this year the tributes will be chosen from the pool of existing victors. As the only female victor for District 12, Katniss is automatically entered in the Games. She goes to Haymitch and asks him to protect Peeta, but Haymitch says that Peeta has already come to him and said that whether or not he is chosen he will volunteer for the Games to protect Katniss. At this point, Haymitch tell her that he had sworn to Peeta in the last Games that he would do whatever he could to protect Katniss. Katniss demands that this time he has to do everything he can to protect Peeta. But Peeta volunteers anyway, when Haymitch is chosen.
Only by a stroke of luck is Katniss rescued from the Games, along with a past winner Johanna Mason. The secret District 13, which everyone believed destroyed came to their rescue. They were unable to rescue Peeta, but he was still alive and supposedly brain washed by the Capitol. Katniss becomes their mascot, the mockingjay, because of the pin she wore in both the Games. They wage war against the Capitol. They win, but Katniss discovers that one of the leaders of the rebellion caused the death of her sister so she kills that person, who was supposed to be their new President. The old president, who she was supposed to kill, died anyway, being trampled by a rioting crowd. Katniss then returns to District 12, with Peeta, where she lives for the rest of her life.
Until, of course, she was pulled onto this island. She is highly confused as to what she is doing here.
